All-purpose flour  – all-purpose flour makes for the crispy waffles with chewy inside. Be sure to spoon and level the flour

Eggs – two eggs at room temperature.

Spices  – cinnamon, ginger, ground cloves, and a touch of vanilla extract

Milk– Whole milk can be substituted with reduced-fat, fat-free, or plant-based milk.

Sugar -dark brown sugar, but light brown sugar also works too.

Orange zest – Adds a hint of sweet freshness to these waffles. My secret ingredient for the best gingerbread waffles.

Dark molasses – One of the main ingredients that give these waffles their gingerbread flavor.

HOW TO MAKE GINGERBREAD WAFFLES

Follow these simple steps to make homemade Gingerbread Waffles:

  1. Mix the dry ingredients – In a large bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, ground ginger, ground cloves, cinnamon, salt, and ground cloves in a mixing bowl. Set aside.
  2. Mix the wet ingredients – Whisk together milk and eggs in another mixing bowl, and then stir in the oil, molasses, orange zest, and vanilla.
  3. Combine wet and dry – Add the dry ingredients to the wet, and stir until well combined.
  4. Make the waffles – Heat the waffle iron. Pour batter (about ¾ cup) into the hot waffle iron and cook until golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Continue until you have used all the waffle batter.

PRO TIPS FOR MAKING THIS RECIPE

  1. Preheat the waffle maker. Make sure the waffle maker is nice and hot before adding the batter. A hot waffle iron will ensure crispy, perfect waffles each and every time.
  2. Keep cooked waffles warm. Place the cooked waffles on a sheet pan and keep them warm in a preheated oven at 250°F until you are ready to serve them to prevent cold, soggy waffles.
  3. Add candied nuts. Candied nuts are a great way to add some crunch and flare to these waffles.
  4. Use room-temperature dairy. I always take out my eggs ahead of time or place them in warm water to ensure that they are not too cold before adding them. I also place the milk in a microwave for a few seconds to remove the chill from it.
  5. Double the recipe. This recipe makes about 4 waffles, but can easily be doubled or tripled for a crowd!
