This Sweet potato pie recipe is really easy to make and tastes like way more work was put in than actually was! If you are a beginner to the sweet potato pie world, then this recipe is for you!
Fall is my favorite time of year! Baking is probably my favorite pastime during the fall. Well…To be honest, I like baking year-round, but there is something to be said about baking sweet cakes and pies during the fall months. Maybe it’s the crisp fall air or maybe it’s the fact that I know I’ll only truly be able to enjoy a few true “fall” days here in Texas. Either way, I’m ready for more baking. I grew up eating plenty of sweet potato pies, but honestly, I don’t bake these often. I am more of a Pecan pie girl. That doesn’t mean that I do not enjoy a good sweet potato pie. I really enjoy anything sweet potato. I even make chili using them…More of that at a later time.
The Ingredients
Here’s a list of what you will need for the sweet potato pie:
Sweet Potatoes – Well, It wouldn’t be a sweet potato pie without plenty of these! I dice mine, then boil them.
Eggs – Makes this one rich and adds structure
Sugar – I use granulated sugar and a little bit of dark brown sugar
Evaporated milk – Adds more richness to this pie
Butter – I use just a touch of butter
Vanilla – Adds a nice aroma, and let me be honest, it just makes any dessert better!
Cinnamon – Gives this pie a nice warm taste
Nutmeg – Only a little bit is needed in this pie
Salt – Just a pinch
Pie Crust – 1 prepared pie crust
Tools: I meant what I said about this being an easy sweet potato pie recipe. My blender was not used at all here. So if you want to remove all strings from your pie, be sure to use a strainer!

- Blend in the milk and eggs: Once all of the sugar and spices have been added, add the milk and eggs, blending well.
- Fill the pie shell: Place the pie filling into a prepared pie crust, then place it on a lined sheet pan.
- Bake: Place the pie in a preheated oven for 1 hour at 350°F ( 177°C). Allow the pie to cool completely before serving.
PRO TIPS FOR MAKING THIS RECIPE
- Cut Uniformly. Cut your sweet potatoes into equal-sized pieces. This will ensure that they cook evenly and won’t end up with overcooked or undercooked parts.
- Size matters. When choosing sweet potatoes for pies and casseroles, you want to look for the smaller ones, Smaller sweet potatoes are sweeter, cook faster, and are easier to mash than the bigger ones.
- Make homemade whipped cream. While I understand the convenience store-bought whipped cream provides, there is nothing like homemade whipped cream!
- Use a strainer. Serious sweet potato pie eaters know that the best way to make sure that you remove the strings is to use a strainer. This is very important! Especially since this recipe doesn’t require the use of a blender. Now, If you own a blender, simply add your filling to the blender and puree until smooth before filling your pie.
- Blind bake the crust. For a flakier pie crust, blind-bake the crust before filling your pie.
