Growing up in Texas, my family ate lots of bbq. As a matter of fact, I can pretty much guarantee that two things will always be served at my family gatherings, Gumbo and BBQ! I remember my uncles always making bbq sauce from scratch. I do not know of many Texans who don’t! There is just something so amazing and authentic about a homemade bbq sauce. I personally like to make mine thicker and it’s gotta have some kick!
BBQ SAUCE INGREDIENTS

Ketchup – Any brand of ketchup work fine here
Brown Sugar – Dark brown sugar has a deep molasses flavor that is perfect for BBQ sauce, but light brown sugar also works fine.
Pineapple Juice – Pineapple juice is used instead of water or stock. Any brand of pineapple juice works fine.
Apple Cider Vinegar – Apple cider vinegar is the go-to choice when making bbq sauce, but white vinegar works too.
Spices – A blend of celery seed, mustard powder, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne.
Garlic – We use only 2 cloves of garlic to give this sauce the perfect amount
Worcestershire Sauce – Gives this bbq sauce a tangy umami flavor
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE BBQ SAUCE
If you are are wanting to make an easy yet flavorful and delicious BBQ Sauce, This is how you do it:
- Add & Simmer – Add all of the ingredients to a saucepan, bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce and allow it to simmer for 20-30 minutes.
- Cool Slightly – Remove the sauce from the heat and allow it to cool. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
- Slather – Add liberal amounts of this delicious sauce to your grilled meats!
HOW TO USE BBQ SAUCE
BBQ Sauce is not only great for slathering on your favorite smoked ribs and chicken, but is also great on burgers, pizza, and even as a non-traditional meatloaf glaze!
